Clay Pigeon Shooting Lessons

In the interests of gun safety, as well as Covid Secure opening requirements all shooting lessons provided by ourselves are cancelled until social distancing is no longer required.

We have a free lance instructor with a visor & mask taking direct bookings for 1 to 1 lessons at the Essex S.G. on weekdays only, details below, please email Richard with any enquiries.

Richard Stirland AICSI 

Richard is a qualified CPSA Instructor and Coach and an Associate of the Institute of Clay Shooting Instructors (AICSI) he has been shooting for over 40 years. And works with both advanced and novice shooters in Sporting Clays and Game shooting Techniques.  

Shooting Lesson Protocol - Covid 19

Participants will be required to abide by the following rules these are not guidelines and no allowance will be made.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

The wearing of PPE is mandatory and will either be purchased by the candidate prior to arriving at the ground or can be purchased on the day at the ground. This to include:-

  • Safety Glasses (if the candidate already wears sturdy glasses for normal day to day use these will suffice)
  • Ear protection either ear plugs or headphones
  • Face Mask (Candidate to provide, these will not be available at the ground)
  • Head protection preferably a peaked cap ( Candidate to provide, Essex S.G. caps available £12 each on the day )

Only Safety Glasses and Ear Protection will be available on the ground to purchase

The Instructor / Coach will be wearing a visor and gloves throughout the lesson as they have to be in close contact with the candidate during the discharging of the shotgun it's imperative that each participant respects this and stays alert to potential risk to both parties.     


Clay Pigeon Shooting is one of the safest sports in the country, and we aim to keep it that way.

Safety always comes first & strict safety procedures are in place at all of our events.Great Britain has a world-class National Team, who have won Gold, Silver & Bronze Medals at the 2000, 2012 & 2016 Olympic Games.

Beginners are always welcome at our events. At present we hold a clay pigeon shoot every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday & alternate Sundays

You'll be provided with a safety briefing, full tuition, hearing / eye protection, clays & cartridges. Use of the guns is free of charge, we have a large choice of Beretta shotguns, 12 & 20 gauge for the exclusive use of our shooting lessons.

Ladies & children over the age of 13 are welcome, we have a  selection of smaller gauge guns to use.

Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

All of our instructors are suitably qualified & experienced shooters.

Weekday opening hours
Wednesday 11am until 3pm, Thursday  11am until 3pm & Friday 12pm until 4 pm  

50 shots costs tbc per guest including full tuition, safety equipment &  all consumables required. Tuition takes place either individually, or in small groups on a specially designated beginners shooting stand. If you have a group 4 +)  to book in for a special occasion  you'll be with your own instructor & we'll provide  a winner’s trophy  free of charge, please ask for details when booking.

For guests who are thinking of taking up the sport & applying for a shotgun certificate we offer a safety certificate lesson, takes between 90 to 120 minutes, involves a checklist of procedures you'll need to understand & shooting at 50 clays & cartridges with an instructor, costs £110.00

There are two very nice country pubs nearby for meals afterwards, the Black Bull & the Queens Head
