Facilities at the ground have recently been updated,  we  havea skeet range, a down the line layout & a 120 + bird sporting layout open. The targets on the sporting layout are changed regularly.  

The skeet, DTL & sporting layouts have Claymate solo release equipment installed, so that you can shoot on your own without having to press release buttons at the same time. 

At the moment both Skeet layouts are set up for English Skeet.

Cartridges & refreshments are available during opening hours. Clays cost 28p each.

New faces are always welcome, tuition is available for beginners by appointment. 

Individual tuition costs  £59 ( approx 1 hour ) including 50 clays & 50 cartridges on weekdays only.

We used to change our opening hours during the summer, this is no longer the case.

Wednesday  11am until 3pm 

Thursday   11am until 3pm 

Friday  12pm until 4 pm 

& on alternate Saturdays  11am until 3pm 

Occasionally we have to cancel the shooting due to the weather, ( snow or extreme wind usually )  the decision to cancel often won’t be made until the morning, shortly before we open. If you have lesson or group booking made for a day that we have to cancel we will call you immediately.

There are two very nice country pubs nearby for meals afterwards, the Black Bull & the Queens Head

Please note we're not permitted under current planning restrictions to open on any Bank Holiday Holidays at the Essex Shooting Ground.

Copfurn Shooting Ground  is located on the Margaretting Road, Margaretting, near Chelmsford, Essex.

As you'll see from the map link above the venue is 2 minutes away from the A12 at Margaretting & 3 minutes from the A414 west of Chelmsford. 

From the A12 heading North  exit at J14. Turn left at the end of the slip road & head towards Writtle, Copfurn is approx 1 mile on the right after the trees are close to the road, drive slowly please.

On the A414 from Ongar heading towards  Chelmsford there are two roundabouts a mile apart before you reach Chelmsford. Turn right at the 2nd roundabout, signposted to Margaretting. We are about 1.5 miles away, on the left, drive slowly please.

The shoot is an English Sporting  layout, 80 birds shot over  10 stands. Trophy & birds only classes are available. The shoot  operates on the Claymate system, so if you are on your own you can use the solo delay features to launch the clays easily. 

There is a hard standing car park of a limited size, & grassed parking for 4w/drives, so please car share when possible. 

Parking on the main road outside is not permitted at all.

Hot & cold refreshments available on site.

Plastic & fibre wad cartridges can be used, 24 or 28 gram only, nothing heavier, no exception.

80 birds is £22.00

For less than 80 per guest clays are charged at 30p per target, over 80 per guest, 28p per target ( 100 birds is £28.00 )

You can shoot as many, or as few targets as you wish.

Open from 10am until 2pm.  

Please note that shooting finishes at 2pm on the dot!

 If there is snow on the ground, we will usually cancel the event. 

If we have to cancel, the first thing we do is leave a pre recorded message on the mobile 07768 742117, the decision to cancel often won’t be made until  early in the morning on the day of the event.
